Is it Actually Water Leaking From My Car?
The first thing you want to do is confirm that the fluid is actually water. Take a piece of paper and place it under the leak. If the fluid is anything but clear, then there is a greater issue going on. Common fluid colors you might see include:
- Red: Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid
- Orange: Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant
- Yellow: Radiator Coolant
- Green: Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator
- Blue: Windshield Wiper Fluid
- Dark Brown: Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
- Light Brown: Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant
- Pink: Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid
If you see any of these other colors, schedule an appointment in Shiloh to have your vehicle inspected. It is possible you have cracked windshield wiper fluid reservoir or something more requiring attention.
Common Reasons Your Car Leaks Water
If the fluid is indeed water, and you have noticed it collecting under your vehicle’s engine or tailpipe, then there is no need to fret. Due to the condensation your car’s air conditioning system makes when it’s activated, it’s normal to see a small puddle of water near the back of the engine. If you spy water near the tailpipe it is usually exhaust condensation that will dissipate when the muffler warms up.
What Else Could it Be?
If there is a large amount of water coming from the exhaust and smoke coming from your tailpipe that is a different story. You have likely blown a gasket, in which case the engine is burning off coolant along with the fuel.
