How to Check Coolant Levels

Coolant Car Check

If you’re taking on car care in your own Lebanon garage, you might be asking, “What is coolant?” Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and regulates engine temperatures. Whether you drive a new or used car, coolant is a crucial fluid. Coolant contains additives to ensure that it won’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and that it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. With such important responsibilities, it’s wise to learn how to check coolant levels to ensure that your vehicle is in tip-top shape. Read on with the Auffenberg Nissan service pros to learn more!

What to Look for When Checking Coolant

Now that you know what coolant is, learning how to check coolant levels is a relatively easy task! First, you don’t have to open the radiator cap to check the level. Rather, you can check the markings on the side of the reservoir. If the coolant level reaches the “full” mark, you’re fine to continue on with your Mascoutah travels without any changes. If the level is below the “full” indicator, remove the radiator cap and add more coolant.

You can also add a 50/50 mix of coolant/water at this point, but make sure to read the bottle to see if it’s premixed. This is also a good chance to inspect the hoses attached to the radiator to check for any leaks or damage.

Note: If you do need to add more coolant, be sure the engine has cooled. Also, make sure you don’t open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

When to See a Service Technician

Coolant should be thinner than oil but thicker than water. If you notice that your coolant has a sludgy consistency, book a service appointment ASAP. This is an indication that you may have a gasket leak. While driving is possible, a gasket leak will drain your coolant quickly. This means that you’re putting your vehicle at risk of overheating and being severely damaged.

When to Change Coolant

As you travel through East St. Louis, your coolant level will naturally deplete over time. As a result, you’ll want to check your cooling system once every three to six months. In most cases, the fluid will be blue, green, yellow, or red. If it’s brownish or colorless, flush the system and replace the fluid!
